Mothers Day is a very special holiday that is celebrated all over the world to honor mothers and show how much they are appreciated.
In America, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year.
It is the day that millions of people take their Mothers out to eat and buy them special gifts that shows their love.
But where and why did it all begin? It began with ancient cultures that started with the Greeks.
Once every spring they dedicated a celebration to Rhea, who was considered the mother of Gods.
The Romans, British Isles, Celtic and Europe also made offerings to their "Great Mother of Gods".
The fourth Sunday in "Lent" was set aside by the Christians to honor Mary the mother of Jesus Christ.
Eventually, England took this holiday and named it "Mothering Sunday" and made it to include all mothers, instead of just Mary.
Following in the tradition of this English holiday a woman in the United States named Julia Ward Howe set aside a day in which she asked mothers to rally together for peace.
She even wrote the "Mothers Day Proclamation".
She was considered to be a suffragist, pacifist and was also recognized as a poet.
However, her efforts failed and she could not get formal recognition for a holiday consisting of mothers for peace.
Almost 150 years ago (after the attempt of Julia Ward Howe) a woman named Anna Jarvis set aside a special day to make people aware of the health condition residents in her community suffered from.
She called it "Mothers Work Day" because she felt like mothers could support this cause better than anyone else.
When she died her daughter (who had the same name as her mother) Anna Jarvis started up a campaign that was designed to memorialize her mother and all the work she had done.
The first service was held in a church located in West Virginia.
It was held in the year 1908 on May 10th.
At this service she gave out a white carnation which of course, was her mother's favorite.
To help continue with these services each year she enlisted the help of important businessmen and politicians to support her campaign for honoring mothers everywhere.
After five years the House of Representatives accepted a decree saying that a white carnation should be worn by administrators of the federal government on this day that became known as Mothers Day.
Mothers Day became official in 1914 when a bill was signed by Woodrow Wilson declaring this a national holiday.
It has been know as Mothers Day every since.
For a while everyone followed the tradition that Anna Jarvis had started and honored their mothers at church with flowers.
Before long sending cards and letters were added and people began calling their mothers to show their appreciation for all they do throughout the year.
After awhile people began giving gifts for Mothers Day, which was very upsetting to Anna Jarvis because, she felt like it was becoming too commercial and the true meaning of this day was getting lost in all the hype.
Soon she began regretting the fact that she had even starting this holiday.
Mothers Day is still celebrated the second Sunday of May and has actually became the most popular holiday of the year.
People from all over take this opportunity to let the mothers in their life know how much they are loved and appreciated for all the things they do.
