How to eat out in Cornwall
- 1). Book a table at an upmarket restaurant. Cornwall now boasts a selection of high-class restaurants in seaside resorts across the county. One of the most famous is celebrity chef Rick Stein's "The Seafood Restaurant" in Padstow, north Cornwall. You will need to book several weeks in advance to get a table here. For most Cornish restaurants, book on the day, or if you plan to dine out at the weekend, book at least a day in advance. Cornwall's peak tourism season starts at Easter and runs until the end of August so restaurants will be much busier during this period.
- 2). Drop into a Cornish pub for a meal. You will find at least one pub in every Cornish village and many pubs in each of the main towns and coastal resorts. Competition is fierce and this means the quality of pub food, often known as "pub grub", is high. You won't usually need to book a table in advance. Many pubs offer an informal bar menu of hot and cold snacks, in addition to a restaurant-style menu. Seafood is a speciality at many Cornish pubs.
- 3). Take lunch at a cafe. You will find a wide choice of cafes in all coastal seaside resorts and in many of the inland towns. Ideal for a light snack or lunch, café menus offer a range of hot dishes, including Cornwall's most famous culinary export, the Pasty. This is a delicious mix of seasoned steak and vegetables in a pastry crust that is crimped along the edge.
- 4). Visit a tea room and try the famous Cornish Cream Tea. You will find tea rooms all over Cornwall and they all offer the Cornish Cream Tea. This consists of scones, homemade strawberry or raspberry jam, fresh Cornish clotted cream and dairy butter. A pot of English tea comes as part of the package.
- 5). Sample Fish and Chips. Freshly fried chips and battered, fried fish, eaten straight from the newspaper wrapper is an English favourite that is particularly popular in Cornwall. Look for "Fresh Fish Served Daily" signs in fish and chip shop windows to ensure you get a delicious piece of fish that may have been caught just a few hours before.
