Asperger"s Adults - Living With Asperger"s As an Adult

103 163
In a world of "Autism Speaks" and Jenny McCarthy, there seems to be a groundswell of support for the children who are affected by autism and related disorders.
And it is highly overdue.
When a child has a meltdown in the middle of a store because he is overwhelmed by the fluorescent lights and the sounds, some "well meaning" woman doesn't come up to the mom and say, "If that were my child, I'd give him a swat on the behind!" People are finally beginning to understand our little ones!! However, in the world of Asperger's Adults, it is quite different.
Many adults with Asperger's Syndrome are only now being diagnosed and helped.
If you have problems in social situations (have difficulty making small talk) and feel overwhelmed when shopping in malls and grocery stores, and find it hard to maintain eye contact with someone you are speaking with, you may be an adult with Asperger's Syndrome.
If you are very passionate about a particular subject (or two) and obsess about it, you may be an adult with Asperger's Syndrome.
If you struggle with your day to day time management and daily activities and find little patience for small talk, you might be an adult with Asperger's Syndrome.
But, being an adult with Asperger's Syndrome isn't a death sentence! If you suspect that you have Asperger's Syndrome, find a psychologist who is well-versed with the DSM-IV.
ASK! A good psychologist will also help you with a career path as well.
Many adults with Asperger's Syndrome can have productive careers.
A psychologist may also help in personal relationships as well.
People with Asperger's Syndrome want "normal" relationships, but sometimes lack the emotional and verbal tools.
A psychologist can help with social skills, teaching the adult with Asperger's Syndrome that he or she is capable of building lasting relationships.
Many Asperger Adults will go on to marry and have children.
It is wonderful that autism and Asperger's Syndrome have gotten notice lately.
It is an epidemic.
1 in 94 boys has it.
However, there is an adult population that is completely forgotten about.
Teens, too.
This population needs more support and understanding.
