How to Improve My Singing Voice & Vocal Cords
- 1). Work on your posture. Keep your back straight and your shoulders back. If your posture is straight and relaxed, you can take deeper breaths and your tone will improve. Standing is the preferred position for singing. Envision the notes coming from your diaphragm and flowing out of your mouth.
- 2). Practice deep breathing exercises to expand your lungs and increase your air capacity. This can help you hold notes longer. Breath in until your lungs are at their capacity. Hold your breath for several seconds and slowly breathe out. Repeat this exercise for several minutes each day to increase your lung capacity. This exercise also teaches breath control.
- 3). Use singing warm-up exercises to help strengthen your vocal range and improve your singing. Do so for 10 to 15 minutes before practices and performances. A common exercise is singing scales, which run from one key to another. Use different vowel and consonant sounds while singing your scales, both up and down, such as "la," "do" and "mi." Sing your scales using quiet, moderate and loud volumes to help your voice learn to hit different notes at different volumes for a more rounded singing experience. Begin by singing the scales slowly and quietly, then gradually increase your speed and volume.
- 4). Practice any songs you intend to perform frequently. The more you sing a song, the more comfortable you and your voice will be with the notes and rhythms.
- 5). Drink lemon juice or tea with lemon to help maintain your vocal cords before a performance.
