As many small business owners start the planning process for 2011, they often discover there are areas of their business that need improvement.
If your desire is to move your business forward, you have a couple of options on how to fill the gap in these areas.
Training.
You can take courses at a local business college or online.
This will involve reading and studying the subject matter at hand.
The reading will be very general and it will be up to you to apply what you have learned to your specific business.
Doing research on the internet and finding articles, videos and blogs on the subject would also fall under training.
Yes you will learn a lot about the subject; however, the responsibility falls to you the business owner to apply what you have learned.
Coaching.

Coaching is the difference between planning and executing verses learning to plan.
Think of sports, if you are not winning at half time, you don't pack up and go home.
You review what happened in the first half and go back on the field with a new perspective.
Coaching takes the step of assisting you with the review of your business and helps you to determine what specific steps need to be taken.
Coaches are not consultants.
A consultant works in a specific industry and becomes an expert in that industry.
They will often develop and plan for the business and then meet with the various entities within the business to review their part in the plan.
Coaches, will help you discover where you are today and where to you want to go in the future.
They want to help you understand where you are and where you need to be.
Coaches will assist you with developing a plan versus creating a plan for you.
A coach will provide support and guidance.
When you look at a business plan it is not that complicated.
However, it often takes someone keeping you on track and asking the difficult questions.
A coach should resist giving you the answers.
They show you a process that will help you develop a plan you can use over and over again.
A coach can help you develop a written marketing plan that is geared to your business.
Based on the time and money you have to devote to building your business in the coming year, you may want to find an organization to assist you that is a blend of training and coaching.
Is there training available on your specific area of interest? Once the training is completed, is there time built in to meet with the coach and develop a plan that is specific to you? This is often a good alternative for the small business owner that has the time to go through the training and then follow specific steps provided by a coach.
