Is Your Company’S Fleet Management Producing The Required Results?
A feature of the English language that we speak here in the States is that it is forever evolving and introducing revised meanings for older words and phrases. Take “fleet†for example; a navy was always comprised of a fleet (or fleets) of ships and it was a logical extension to apply this description to any number of ocean going vessels that had a common purpose or ownership but were not designed for warfare. In addition, when grouping ships together as a fleet, they did not necessarily all have to be sailing to the same place at the same time.
However, I don’t think that anyone ever says that Wells Fargo had a fleet of stagecoaches or that the pioneers ventured west in fleets of wagons? However, today, when someone, or some business entity, owns and operates any type of motor vehicle in a quantity that is bigger than one unit; we happily talk about a fleet of vehicles. This has even reached a point where we have no trouble understanding what is being said when reference is made to a “trucking empireâ€.
No Matter What Type Of Fleet; Someone Has To Manage It
For the navies of the world, an admiral would be put in charge to ensure that the ships went where required; at the right time and performed whatever duties their owner (for a navy, this would be the rulers of the country) desired from them. You could say that Columbus was in charge of Fleet Management system on behalf of the King of Spain when he set sail to “discover†the Americas. In broad outline, was Columbus’s job any different from a taxi dispatcher in New York today whose job is to see to the Fleet Management of the owner’s fleet of Yellow cabs? Ships, automobiles, trucks, etc; someone has to decide how best to deploy them to produce the best results (i.e. profit) for their owners - that is the job of those involved in Fleet Management.
Knowledge Is The Key To Good Fleet Management
It does not matter if it is a tractor and trailer delivering frozen turkeys for the Thanksgiving rush or a cruising ambulance awaiting the next “victimâ€; if the operations manager does not know where the vehicles are or what they are doing, how is he/she to manage their movements efficiently? Fortunately, with today’s GPS and allied telematic technologies; Fleet Management can now keep track of their vehicles in real time all of the time.
