Olympic National Park Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Case

It's never easy to write about a personal injury or wrongful death case; an innocent person's life is changed forever because of the negligence of one person or institution. But that's why personal injury attorneys exist, to fight for justice for the innocent. By writing these stories, we can show our readers that justice does exist for personal injury victims, in some form or another.

The family of Bob Boardman has made personal injury and wrongful death claims totaling $10,022,700 against Olympic National Park, who they consider at fault for Boardman's death. Boardman, a 63 year old Port Angeles resident was gored by a 370 pound mountain goat while hiking ok Klahhane Ridge in Olympic National Park.

Boardman had not acted aggressively towards to animal, even though the Park allegedly had suggested that throwing rocks would scare off the animal. Susan Chadd, the widow of Boardman, thought this advice from the Park was "very irresponsible."

Not only had the Park offered poor advice on scaring away the large animal, but the mountain goat also had a history of "aggressive behavior," according to Chief Park Ranger Colin Smith.

The incident happened while Boardman and his wife were hiking with a friend. They were sitting and eating lunch when the mountain goat came close to them with its head down and pawing at the ground. He was making bleating sounds and would not leave the hikers alone. The group decided to leave the area and the goat followed. Boardman told his wife and friend to walk ahead and the animal followed beside him for almost a mile before fatally goring him.

The mountain goat had severed Boardman's artery and stood over him for about 30 minutes, making it impossible for his wife and friend to reach him. Boardman's widow, Susan Chad later said in an interview "I feel like they weren't protecting people and the ecosystem, and I feel that on the day of the accident, they responded very poorly to our calls for help," The mountain goat was killed later that afternoon and a necropsy showed the animal was perfectly healthy.

Based on the negligence displayed by Olympic National Park; its previous knowledge of the aggressive animal, its poor advice on getting rid of the animal and its poor response to the incident, Boardman's family may very well have a personal injury case. The claims of $22,700 include expenses for counseling sessions, newspaper obituaries, emergency room procedures and funeral expenses.

The remaining $10 million in claims have been filed as wrongful death claims, with $5 million for Boardman's estate, $3 million for his wife, Susan Chadd's, estate and $2 million for their son, Jacob Haverfield's, estate.
