How to Grow Mint or Peppermint Plants
- 1). Plant peppermint in a location that has rich, fertile soil. The plant will grow equally well in sunlight or shade, according to the University of Virginia Extension service. Plant seedlings about a foot apart.
- 2). Create a barrier around the plant, if you are not growing it in a container. Peppermint is extremely invasive and will quickly spread. Bury plastic or metal edging about a foot under the surface all around the plant.
- 3). Keep the soil moist and cool, but not overly waterlogged. Standing water can cause root-rot.
- 4). Clip the leaves frequently, or simply pluck them off the plant. This encourages healthier growth. Dried leaves can be used to flavor tea.
