Insulation to keep your home warm

101 11
It was not that many years ago when most homes were draughty and poorly insulated without double glazing or central heating, which meant that many families had heating only in the main room of the house. Over the last few decades however, double glazing and central heating have become standard, providing warmth throughout the home. Yet much of this heat can still be lost through the walls, doors, roof and windows of a house, which not only costs much more in heating bills but is not environmentally friendly either.

The cost of gas and electric has risen considerably and being economical with the heating is essential for many families whilst balancing the need for warmth. Insulation for the home, especially loft insulation, has become one of the most popular projects to be undertaken by a homeowner. Many of these projects are fairly simple yet will provide an effective solution for heat loss throughout the home, saving you money every day.

Loft insulation can make a huge difference to your heating bills, saving up to 20 percent of your energy bills. The cost of loft insulation is low yet effective for approximately 40 years so once you have insulated your loft it won't need further attention for a long time. You can purchase loft insulation material in two main types; rolled or blanket insulation and loose insulation. The rolled insulation is the most popular and is made of mineral wool or fibre glass – and is usually the cheapest. If you use this type of loft insulation you will need to wear protective clothing as it causes irritation to the skin.

Loose fill or granular insulation is made from sheep's wool and doesn't cause irritation as it is natural as well as non toxic. The only drawback to this type of insulation is the higher cost.  Both types are effective forms of loft insulation as they prevent the warm rising air from escaping through the roof.

Cavity wall insulation is also highly recommended as this prevents heat loss through the walls as well as helping with condensation problems; there are many forms of draught proofing your home. Here at Wickes we stock many types of insulation material to help prevent heat loss from your home. Draught proofing windows and doors is advisable as many homes lose heat through draughts. It is also possible to insulate walls and floors with materials that you will find from your local Wickes DIY store. Many of these DIY projects are very simple and are economical measures to help prevent heat loss and draughts, saving you money on your heating and energy bills for years to come.

In some areas of the UK it is possible to receive grants from your local government to help with the cost of insulation. You may receive up to 70 percent of the cost of insulating your home, even if you only require a top up for your loft insulation, saving you money on energy bills immediately.
