    • 1). Determine what system you are using to scan files. Windows Fax and Scan is a logical choice, since it should already be included with Vista. You can also opt to use the settings of your scanner. Dell has Vista compatible scanners controllable by the Dell Imaging Toolbox. HP does as well, and it is controlled through the HP Solution Center.

    • 2). Select "File," then "New Scan" for Windows Fax and Scan. Vista will then have you choose your scanner. Select your scanner and click "OK." From there, the "New Scan" dialogue box will open and you can change your settings. The "Preview" button will show you how your finished scan is going to look, so be sure to check the preview before scanning. Click on "Scan" and check the document list for your document. Right-click it and choose "Save As." Name the scan so that you can use it in the future and pick where you are going to save it. You will have to choose a file format, such as DOC or JPG. Completing this will enable Vista to remember the preferences you have set.

    • 3). Click "Programs" if you're using a Dell printer/scanner in Windows Vista. Go to the Dell printers tab and choose your scanner/printer. Go to the Imaging Toolbox and choose "Settings," then "Toolbox Settings." From there you can access your scan settings. Choosing "Always use simple scan settings" will simply revert to defaults whenever you scan a document or picture. You can customize your scanner settings and save them by choosing "Always start scanning with the settings below." If using this option, adjust your contrast, brightness and color depth and then click "OK." This will save your settings and use them for all future projects.

    • 4). Download an update for your driver if you are using the HP Solution Center. There is a bug that prevents it from saving your scan to the folder you've chosen. HP is aware of this and offers the update on their website. Once you have up-to-date information, you can change your settings and save them. Go to "Programs" and click "HP." Choose your scanner and select "MFP Scan To," which will bring up the scan window. Click "Settings" to open the scan settings window. Select the "Scan" tab, where you will have options for controlling color, size, resolution, etc. Set your preferences and then check the "Use This As The Default For Save To File" box to make these settings available for future scans. There are options under the "File" tab of the scan settings window for where to save the file and what format you want it saved in. Once everything is how you want it to be, click "OK" and your settings will be saved.
