What Are Learning Outcomes for Teaching Adults?

    Knowledge

    • Learning outcomes are the attitudes, skills and knowledge students will be able to demonstrate after completing a course and/or program. Learning outcomes vary depending on the subject being taught, and can be institution-wide. In developing a curriculum, what you want the students to learn are the learning outcomes. In contrast to state standards for grades kindergarten through 12, an instructor, curriculum developer or institution develops the learning outcomes for adult learners.

    Careers

    • For many adult learners, education is the means to an end. Institutions that identify with adult learners will create learning outcomes and experiences that will assist adult learners in connecting learning with real-life situations. These outcomes will give the adult learner skills in finding solutions to problems in everyday life such as career choices or moves. In today's world, problem-solving, teamwork, self-control and planning are vital skills. Learning outcomes that focus on these skills enable the adult learner to be competitive in the job market.

    Responsibility and Communication

    • Some examples of learning outcomes are social responsibility, where students demonstrate interpersonal skills by experiencing diverse environments. Effective communication is a major outcome for adult learners. Because these students may not have a high school diploma, they may not have acceptable communication skills. Critical thinking is another important outcome. Learning to process information critically and make objective decisions may not be something these students are used to doing. Adult learners also tend to have their own personal learning outcomes in terms of short-term and long-term goals that may include careers and being an example to their children.

    Development

    • Developing learning outcomes for a particular course or program requires that the instructor keep all of these factors in mind. This doesn't mean that the rigor of a course or program should be watered down, but that differentiated instruction be put to use to allow the flexibility adult learners need. Differentiated instruction provides options for adult learners and enables them to reach their goals. It also takes into account the different backgrounds and learning styles of the individual student.
