The Scare in Children In April 2010, 23 children were rushed to the hospital within 24 hours of being vaccinated with dangerous fevers and seizures.
As of November, 2010, at least 100 similar chases have been reported and at least 1,000 children had adverse effects.
Australian's Public Health Association claims that these unfortunate episodes have been linked to both Fluvax and Fluvax Junior.
However, despite these occurrences, the TGA says that children are still better off vaccinated because these particular children may have ended up hospitalized anyway if they caught the flu virus and could have been worse off.
Do You Need to be Vaccinated? Most Australian dwellers can benefit from the flu unless they have egg allergies.
However, certain groups of people are at higher risk of experiencing severe flu symptoms if they contract the virus.
Children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years old, pregnant women, healthcare workers, the elderly and patients with congenital heart disease, asthma, chronic liver diseases or with a compromised immune system should receive the vaccination.
Additionally, anyone who lives on or works in a densely populated environment such as nursing homes, dormitories, schools, jails and prisons should become immunized as well.
What are the Side Effects? Nearly everyone will experience some type of small side effect such as soreness at the injection area or a mild fever.
This is completely normal and lets you now that your body is doing its job by creating an antibody.
However, there are some who will also experience fatigue and muscle aches as well.
If you end up with a sore throat, nasal secretions and the rest of the symptoms, this does not mean that your flu shot gave you the flu.
In fact, this isn't even possible.
What it means is that you already picked up the virus before your shot but the symptoms had not become present yet.
It is estimated that 1 out of every 100,000 people will experience Guillaine-Barre syndrome which can cause paralysis from nerve damage.
This condition also offers muscle weakness and a high fever.
Additionally, if you are experiencing Flu Side Effects such as hives, rapid heartbeat, breathing problems, wheezing or paleness, you need to seek emergency treatment immediately because you could be having an allergic reaction.
