    Working From Home

    • When the financial times get a little tight for young couples with children or for people who are unable to travel, working from home can be a productive way to add income. Working from home seems like a good set-up because you don't have to pay for gas, you don't need to find child care and sometimes you don't even need to change out of your pajamas. But how does someone get a job working from home that pays well?

    Your Skills

    • First, you have to find out what your skill set is and how it can apply to the outside work force from inside your home. For example, if you are well-organized, paranoid about safety and do well with children, you might consider opening up your home for day care since there are always career-minded families that need child care. If you are a fast typer and you like computers, you could be an excellent candidate for data entry. Maybe you are great on the phone and you have patience with people. Then you could be a customer service representative. Regardless of your skill set, having some sort of certification or proof of experience helps up your ante. You may have to take a few classes either online or in night school to get those certifications. Let's say you want to do day care. There may be licensing fees associated with running home day cares, as well as various inspections by fire fighters and social workers to make sure your home is safe. With a glowing inspection record and high accreditation standards, your home day care business can stand out.

    Marketing and Online

    • You'll have to get creative with marketing your skills in order to find good work-from-home jobs. Find out who needs your skills and approach that market, showing your upside and how it can save them money. Data entry processors typically need just a computer, memory storage and access to a company server. Corporations might consider hiring you to process data if you if they don't have to pay for your health care or spend money on energy and supplies that you would normally need in the company office. If you decide that you can do tax returns, look around the neighborhood for people who just need easy file returns but don't want to pay companies large fees. If you are a computer repair whiz, there may be elderly couples or computer-phobics that could see some basic repairs and are willing to pay a decent price for them.
Put yourself online as well. You could create a living, breathing resume just by using free websites. Online journalists and writers sometimes use free blogs to link their works or sort them by special categories. Consider creating a website or using one like MySpace and craigslist. Be sure to emphasize your location and skills throughout the site. That way if someone does a search for "computer repair Hayward district" someone may stumble upon your MySpace page that shows pictures of the computers you know how to fix and statements like "I can work from home in the Hayward district."

    Set Up Your House

    • Working from home may seem convenient, but make sure your home area is optimal for the jobs you get. Data entry might not work in a house that has a high-maintenance 2-year-old. If you own several cats and dogs, customer service by phone may not be your best option, given all the background noise. Delivering meals probably won't be your best option if you drive a clunker. Just make sure the work fits you and you can create income from your home office.
