105 13
Some dads can feel a little useless throughout the birth of their baby. As their partner does all the hard work, men are limited to simply holding their hand and being as supportive as possible, despite the fact that thereâEUR(TM)s nothing that they can really do to help. As a new dad, those first minutes as a father will be exhilarating and maybe even a little exhausting. Below we have a few tips for things that you can do to help during the first hour or so of your babyâEUR(TM)s birth. Some of these tips may seem a little obvious, but when youâEUR(TM)re in a complete daze, the obvious isnâEUR(TM)t always quite so clear.

First and foremost, tell your partner how great they have done and give them a big hug to show just how proud you are. It is likely that labour has made your partner feel a mixture of emotions and it is important to show them how well theyâEUR(TM)ve done. Your partner may be so exhausted that they canâEUR(TM)t keep an eye on what is going on with the baby. You can be the one to keep an eye on all of the checks that the doctor and midwife do. Take everything in so you can tell your partner all about what happened immediately after the birth.

You may get the opportunity to cut your babyâEUR(TM)s umbilical cord which can be a very special moment. DonâEUR(TM)t worry about hurting anyone, your midwife will clamp the cord and let you know exactly what you need to do.

Be sure to take as many photos as possible and maybe even film the events after the birth. Bear in mind that your partner may want to tidy herself up a little bit first. Some new mums like to give their hair a brush and wipe the sweat off their face as these photos will be looked at for many years to come! When it comes to filming things, obviously be a little tactful about what you film, try to keep the emphasis on your baby and donâEUR(TM)t film any gruesome medical bits that your partner may not want on camera!

As soon as you get the opportunity, cuddle your baby. DonâEUR(TM)t worry if this is the first time youâEUR(TM)ve held a baby, the midwives will be happy to show you. Skin to skin contact is important so you might want to unbutton your shirt slightly to make close contact with your baby.
