How to Use the Trails in the San Gabriel Mountains
- 1). Pack a backpack with items such as containers of water, food, dry clothing, matches, a first-aid kit and maps. These items will come in handy on the trail and may save your life in an emergency.
- 2). Buy a "Forest Adventure Pass." These are sold at local outdoors stores and Forest Service offices for $30 per year or $3 per day. Without one, your car or truck may be towed from where you left it on a trailhead or highway.
- 3). Get a map of the San Gabriel Mountains' trails from the U.S. Geological Survey or the U.S. Forest Service. These maps contain trail and mountain information. Select a trail and study your route.
- 4). Check weather forecasts provided by the National Weather Service. The weather service issues flood and fire warnings in addition to daily and weekly forecasts. Do not use San Gabriel trails in severe weather.
