    Honeysuckle

    • Honeysuckle is a plant that usually grows on a vine, although there are shrub varieties available. Honeysuckle has little yellow blossoms that give off a sweet fragrance. Plant some honeysuckle, of the vine variety, on both sides of the arbor. Allow it to grow up the sides and over the top. The tendrils may need a little training, especially at the beginning to get the plant to attach itself to the sides of the arbor. Leave some of the vines hanging down once they reach the top if desired. Honeysuckle is a hardy plant that is easy to grow doing well in USDA zones 5 through 8.

    Climbing Roses

    • Climbing roses come in many different varieties ranging both in size and color. Some varieties are a little more fragrant than others and some blooms may last longer than others, or bloom all summer long. Choose a couple of different colors of climbing roses that will climb over the arbor and eventually the vines will intertwine, spreading out the colors of the roses. Roses grow well in most climates, but be sure to choose one proven to do well in your particular zone.

    Clematis

    • Different varieties of clematis bloom at different times of the year. Choose a variety of clematis to grow over your arbor when there are not too many other flowers blooming in the garden. Choose from a variety of colors and flower sizes. This climbing plant may need training after the initial planting to attach to the arbor. Planting different varieties of the clematis on the same arbor can lengthen the blooming time. For example, plant one type of clematis that blooms in the spring to summer and another that blooms from summer to fall.

    Wisteria

    • Wisteria is an easy to grow vine for those who are not expert gardeners or do not have a lot of time to spend working in the garden. Choose from either Japanese or Chinese wisteria for climbing over the arbor. Japanese wisteria has larger flowers that grow from 12 to 18 inches long. The Chinese wisteria flowers range from 9 to 12 inches. Wisteria grows in a few different colors including white, purple and pink. Wisteria vines can get rather thick so make sure that the arbor in your garden is sturdy and securely in place.
