Stage 1 - Tip 1
- Attach a leash to your puppy - you need to be able to control his environment.
- Hide some treats in your hand - some treats that you know he likes.
- Now take your puppy outside - you can put a cue on this command - something like - "come on outside" or "want to go toilet.
" - Use the same cue every-time - this way your puppy will learn to associate the two and won't get confused.
- Watch your puppy for signs that he is going to eliminate - he may start sniffing the ground or assuming the position.
As SOON as he does this it's your cue - say something like "go potty" or "go poop" "do your business" , It doesn't matter but use the same cue every-time. - When he has done his business - praise him.
Don't just pet him and say "good boy", make a real deal out of it, make him feel really special and give him a treat - something that he really likes - my dog loves digestives - just use something that your dig really loves.
- Give your puppy an allotted amount of time when he is outside - if you want him to do his business in five minutes then give him five minutes - but don't give him twenty minutes on a Saturday and then expect him to do his business in five minutes on a Sunday.
- Ok so now try releasing your puppy from his leash - make sure that its safe and give him another cue - the same rules apply i.
e use the same cue every-time. - Now it's the test - your puppy should now go do his potty in the allotted time.
- If he doesn't go in the allotted time - bring him back inside and put him in his crate - for about 10-15 mins.
This way you can watch him. - After the allotted time take him outside and try again.
