How to Keep Your Vermiculture Warm

    • 1). Coil the pond tubing loosely around the inside surfaces of the worm bin so that about 2 feet of each end stands free of the bedding.

    • 2). Drill a 3/4-inch hole near a corner of the bin to create a passage for the free ends of tubing.

    • 3). Push one free end of the tubing onto the fountain pump nipple. Lay the pump on the bottom of the bucket. Let the other end of the tubing, which will return the pumped water, dangle loosely in the bucket.

    • 4). Press the aquarium heater's suction cups on the side of the bucket. Set its gauge to around 80 to 90 degrees F, depending on how cold the worm bin area is; the goal is to have the bedding in the bin reach around 70 degrees and to compensate for the loss of heat as the water travels in the tube.

    • 5). Fill the bucket with water up to the line or range indicated on the side of the aquarium heater. Mark the corner of the bucket lid to show where to cut off just enough to allow an outlet for the tubing and the power cords for the pump and the heater. Cut off the corner.

    • 6). Snap the bucket lid in place. Tape the tubing in place if the lid doesn't gently compress it to keep it from slipping out.

    • 7). Plug in the pump and the heater. Leave them on throughout cold weather to warm the bin.
