So What Is Permission Marketing? Permission marketing was a phrase first coined by modern marketing expert Seth Godin some time ago and was widely considered to be a break through method of marketing.
This approach to marketing was by all intents and purposes a way of advertising by getting people to give consent before receiving any information regarding products or services.
This concept suggests that communications requested by people have a greater impact and higher response rate than most kinds of unsolicited advertising that we are bombarded with every day for example through print, mail and T.
V.
This is often referred to as interruption marketing.
This kind of 'in your face' marketing is the complete opposite to permission marketing.
Where Does This Apply To Social Network Marketing? Before social network marketing came along permission marketing could never really exist without some kind of interruption marketing.
Potential customers would always need to be made aware of new products/services and have their attention grabbed in some way.
Suddenly with social network marketing we no longer need to get an opt-in to our list before we can connect with people.
With sites like Facebook all we need to do is search for people within our chosen field and bingo, we can connect with like minded people who MAY have an interest in our products or services.
This allows us to interact on a much more personal level.
We can now get to know someone and show them what we're all about.
Once you've got a connection that's evolved naturally to a place of trust, then it becomes much easier to talk business.
This is when permission marketing really comes to the fore.
Fan pages on Facebook are a great way to invite people to join a group that as information about your business.
Then over the course of time we can engage them in polite conversation and provide them with information that is relevant, entertaining or inspirational and will hopefully add some value to their lives.
Once they have determined that we are genuine and seek to provide value in some way, we can then get their permission to send them information regarding our products/services.
This is much better than bombarding them with links to our businesses that they haven't requested.
You wouldn't just ask a total stranger for money the first time you met them would you? The same applies here.
Nobody likes been spammed and people who use these methods to get there message out there using social networking sites are doing themselves more harm than good.
They will find that they do not attract people to them in fact probably quiet the opposite will happen.
Consider how Seth Godin puts it: "Permission marketing: turning strangers into friends and friends into customers.
" You've probably realised there is a great deal of humility and patience needed in order for permission marketing to work.
We are dealing with human beings.
There are no short cuts here.
You need to show great interest in other people and don't talk about yourself too much in the beginning.
Find out about them and their interests.
Always remember that people do business with people who they know, like and trust.
Gain that trust and you'll have a friend who will start to see you as a reliable source of knowledge in your chosen field and will continue to come to you for information and advice.
Use permission marketing when prospecting or promoting your business on social networking sites and you'll soon see the fantastic friendships and long lasting business partnerships that will come to fruition.
