How to Troubleshoot an IP Conflict
- 1). Renew the IP address using the ipconfig command by going to the Command Prompt from the "Start" menu. Type "ipconfig /renew" and check if Windows resolved the IP conflict. Repeat this step with other conflicted computers.
- 2). Open the "Network Connections" icon in the Control Panel and double-click the connection that has the IP address conflict if your network relies on static IP addresses. Click "Properties" and then click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item. Click the "Properties" button in that dialog to bring up another dialog where Windows displays the IP addresses.
- 3). Repeat Step 2 with the other computers that have an IP address conflict and compare the IP address values displayed in the "IP Address" textbox. If two computers have the same value, change the value of any conflicted computer to a number unused by other computers.
- 4). Bring up the IP address dialogs of all computers if they are all connected to a router. Click "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" so the router does the assigning without running into conflicts.
- 5). Restart all computers and check if the IP conflict problem balloon no longer shows up on the system or notification tray. If all computers have file sharing enabled, open the network on each computer and see if all other computers are present.
