How to Change the Line in a Weed Eater
- 1). Slide the ignition switch on the Weed Eater's rear handle into the "Off" setting. Put the engine on the ground. Hoist the shaft into the air and cradle it in your arm. Grip the moving head and hold it steady. Pinch in the two locking tabs on the head while lifting off the cover.
- 2). Slide out the spool and remove any remaining cutting line. Clean the spool inside the head and cover by wiping them with the rag. Check for cracks or other signs of breakage. Replace the cutting equipment if it's broken.
- 3). Cut off the appropriate length of the cutting line by checking the specifications in your owner's manual. Snip the line in half. Insert the first line into the anchor hole on the spool. Let 1/2 an inch to protrude from the anchor hole. Steady the spool with one hand while you wind the line around the head with your other hand.
- 4). Wind the line following the arrow on the spool. Use tight, even rows of line. Leave about six inches free from the spool. Place the unwound section into the holding notch on the upper part of the spool. Repeat the same winding procedure for the second line. Use the bottom anchor hole and wind the line along the bottom half of the spool. Stick the remaining end into the holding notch.
- 5). Push the wound spool against the spring inside the cutting head. Rotate the spool until it clicks into place. Fit the line ends through the exit holes on the head. Reattach the cover and press it against the spool until it snaps into place.
