How to Prepare a Fiberglass Boat for a Gel Coat
- 1). Gouge a little more of the factory gel coat off of your boat by running the corner of a wood chisel's blade through the gouge.
- 2). Mix the gel coat with the tint before you mix the resin and hardener together, then mix the resin and hardener, and use a putty knife to slather it into the gouge you just enlarged. Let the gel coat patch build up over the top of the gouge because the gel coat will shrink as it cures, and you want to have a bit left on top to sand smooth.
- 3). Sand the gel coat patch down, using 120- then 220-grit sandpaper. Finally, when the surface is level, use 400-grit sandpaper to polish the surface. Apply a bit of carnauba car with a clean cloth.
