In this class we'll learn the elements necessary to make a good crime novel or short story. How to create mystery and suspense and conflict. How to choose the right protagonist, the right antagonist, atmosphere, and voice. We'll use samples of crime writing both from other writers as well as the instructor. There will be a short writing assignment for the class.

Charles Salzberg has written four crime novels and is finishing his fifth. His first, Swann's Lake of Despair, was nominated for a Shamus Award for Best First PI novel.  He's written two others in the series, Swann Dives In and Swann's Lake of Despair. His novel, Devil in the Hole was named one of the Best Crime Novels of the Year by Suspense magazine. He teaches writing at the New York Writers Workshop where he is one of the Founding Members.

Fiction Workshop with Rachel Sherman


SPRING Fiction Writing Workshop
in Brooklyn

Beginning Tuesday, April 28th, 7:30-9:30pm
$450 for 10 weeks  ($425 for returning students)

Structured around in-class discussions of you work, we will focus on outline, structure, plot, narrative, dialogue, pacing and content. You will receive written critiques and edits from both me as well as your peers. This is an open class for both beginning writers as well as writers who currently have a novel or short story in progress. The class will culminate in an (optional) reading.

Rachel Sherman holds an MFA in fiction from Columbia University. Her short stories have appeared in McSweeney’s, Fence, Open City, Conjunctions, and n+1, among other publications. Her first book, The First Hurt, was short-listed for the Story Prize and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, and was named one of the 25 Books to Remember in 2006 by the New York Public Library.  Her first novel, Living Room, was released in 2009. She teaches writing at Rutgers and Columbia Universities, and blogs for the Parenting Section of The Huffington Post and is the “Fiction Expert” for About.com.
