Things to Do With Pumpkin Pie Spice

104 5

    Breakfast

    • Warm up a winter breakfast by adding pumpkin pie spice to your morning oatmeal. Sprinkle a little on top along with some brown sugar and swirl it in for a spicy-sweet start. Leisurely weekend mornings are perfect for pumpkin-spiced pancakes. Add some of your spice blend to regular pancake batter, along with a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin, cook on the griddle until brown and cooked through, and slather with maple syrup. Or, for busy weekday mornings, make pumpkin muffins to grab on the go. You can also add pumpkin pie spice to quickbreads like coffee cake and banana bread, or substitute it for cinnamon in oatmeal raisin cookies.

    Beverages

    • Spoon a small amount of pumpkin pie spice into a homemade latte and you've got a coffee shop-quality drink for a fraction of the price. (Make sure to blend your spices in thoroughly so that you don't end up swallowing big clumps of them.)

If you're looking to spice up your adult beverages, make a hot buttered rum by mixing a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, a tablespoon of brown sugar, a pat of butter and a shot of rum together with some hot water in a mug, as recommended by the Spice Sherpa.

    Snacks

    • Use your pumpkin pie spice to make some cocoa-spiced cashews, an adaptation of a recipe found on FoodNetwork.com. Mix one egg white with a tablespoon of water. In a separate bowl, mix together 1/3 cup white sugar, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder, and a generous pinch of salt. Toss three cups of cashews in the egg and water mixture, then stir them into the sugar and spice mix until coated. Spoon the nuts on a lined baking sheet and roast them at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes. Portion the cooled nuts into decorative tins and give them as gifts. You can substitute almonds or mixed nuts for the cashews.

You can also use pumpkin pie spice on air-popped popcorn; just spray the warm corn lightly with cooking spray or a butter substitute so that the spices will stick to the popcorn when you sprinkle it on.

    Dips, Spreads, and Toppings

    • Mix a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice into a few tablespoons of cream cheese and spread it on a bagel.

Add an exotic flair to your next potluck or buffet by steaming six to eight carrots, then blending them in a food processor with one clove of minced garlic, a half-teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice and some creme fraiche. Transfer to a bowl and serve with pita chips.
