How to Get a Small Home-Based Business License in Las Vegas, Nevada
- 1). Contact the City of Las Vegas Development Services to verify that you are allowed to perform your business in your home. The Development Services department can give you information on zoning and building regulations.
- 2). Apply for and receive your Nevada State Business License. This license is required for all businesses that do business in the state with a few exceptions for nonprofits, rental and insurance properties, motion pictures and one clause that can apply for home-based businesses. According to the Nevada Secretary of State, you are not required to get a business license if you operate your business from home and you do not make more than 66 and 2/3 percent of the average annual wage. As of 2010, that figure is $27,000 according to the Nevada Secretary of State. You can apply online (see Resources), via mail or in person at the Las Vegas office of the Nevada Secretary of State. As of November 2010, the Nevada State Business License fee is $200 per year.
- 3). Register for a sales or use tax permit with the Nevada Department of Taxation if you are not exempted from the business license. All businesses that make sales or take money in Nevada are required to register for a tax permit unless they are exempted due to the business license exemptions. You can register for the tax number online on the Nevada Department of Taxation website (see Resources).
- 4). Fill out a City of Las Vegas Business License Application. You must bring that application, your Nevada State Business License and your Nevada tax permit information to the City of Las Vegas Business Services Division 30 days before you begin operating. You must pay a $150 application fee when you submit the application, and according to the City Business Services website, your annual license fee will be based on business receipts, so you could owe more than that if you make more than $12,000 in your first six months. Upon review and approval from the zoning department, your license will be approved.
