Physical Activity to Prevent Colon Cancer
- Walking is the simplest of exercises. Walking at a brisk pace for 60 to 90 minutes, at least five days a week, can help stave off colon cancer. You can find all sorts of places to walk where it will not cost any money; most shopping centers open early for mall walkers, for example.
- Swimming is an effective low-impact activity that can get your heart pumping without putting a lot of strain on your joints. Contact your local fitness center or high school to see if it offers an open swim time. Swimming for 30 minutes, five times a week, will get your heart rate up, improve your circulation and possibly lower your cholesterol. Swimming is a low-cost activity that can be done alone or with a partner or friend.
- Dancing is a great aerobic exercise and a good physical activity to get your heart pumping. Check with your local community center to see about taking a dance class--or if you are not willing to take your dancing public, grab your significant other or a friend and dance your heart out at home. Dancing provides your body with a good cardiac workout and will not only help stave off cancer, it will help lower your cholesterol and improve your mood, which can have an effect on your emotional well-being.
- Exercise in general is a good way to reduce the risk of lifestyle-related cancers. The American Cancer Society, in its resource materials, "recommends at least 30 minutes, preferably 45 to 60 minutes, of physical activity on 5 or more days of the week. Taking part in moderate or vigorous activity for at least 45 minutes on 5 or more days of the week may lower your risk for colorectal cancer even more."
Speak to your physician before beginning a significant exercise program, especially if you are at risk for injury or illness.
