How to Keep Birds Away From Grass Seed
- 1). Cover the grass seed with a thin layer of straw. A thin layer of straw will be just enough ground cover to hide the grass seed from the birds without suffocating any fragile sprouts.
- 2). Get a roll of clear plastic (the kind that you cover your windows with in the winter) and stretch it over the seeded area. Secure it with stones or stakes. The clear plastic will make it impossible for the birds to get at your grass seed, and will also act as a greenhouse, encouraging seedling growth.
- 3). Lay some peat moss over the new grass seed. A thin layer, approximately a quarter of an inch, is all that is necessary. The peat moss will help lock in moisture and nutrients for new seedlings, and also hide the grass seed from birds.
- 4). Hide the grass seed with a thin layer of soil. The soil will add a layer of protection for the grass seed and keep the birds at bay. The soil should be sprinkled on by hand. There is no need to pat it down.
- 5). Build a crude fence around the freshly seeded area. Pound four stakes into the ground. Form a square around the area, with the stakes at each point of the square. The stakes should rise about two feet above the ground, and the tops can be wrapped with a thin layer of red tape. Use kite string to form a fence, wrapping it around each post and extending it to the next.
