How To Accept Yourself - A Six-Step Process
I see many people who have issues, habits or characteristics which may be frowned on by others.
However, the way in which they express themselves endears you to them.
This is because they have, at some level, accepted themselves for who they are.
This article gives you a six-stage process that will teach you how to accept yourself so you can relax in your own skin and enjoy your life.
Accepting yourself means you are able to speak from a position of power, dignity and pride.
This makes you completely congruent and confident despite what others may think of you, and despite whether or not you are accepted by society.
So in order to be able to accept yourself and feel comfortable in your own skin follow this six-step process: Stage 1.
Articulate the issues preventing you from moving forward as if you're talking to a third party (eg a professional, practitioner, therapist or even a friend).
This sometimes helps you to express the issues in a constructive manner, and in a way that keeps your dignity intact.
Stage 2.
Decide what it is about yourself that you like and reinforce it.
We all have parts of ourselves that we like.
One way to root these out is to ask yourself the question: 'Why am I glad I'm me?' Identify and list as many aspects here as you can.
Once your list is drawn up, focus on your positive aspects, reinforce them and strengthen them daily.
Stage 3.
Decide what you don't like about yourself, and set yourself on a path to improve those aspects that are important for you to address.
Choose the aspects that prevent you from progressing and decide to improve just those.
Stage 4.
For those other aspects you don't like about yourself, but you're willing to live with, decide to let go of the need to fix them.
This is an important mindset shift, as if frees you up from the need to change every downside, every fault or every negative trait about yourself.
Stage 5.
This stage is about making the decision to fully accept yourself for who you are, what you are and where you are in life given your good and not so good points.
Even though this may be easier said than done, it's not impossible.
Self acceptance is an extremely liberating point to get to as it allows you to let go, move on and live your life with authenticity and integrity.
Stage 6.
The last stage is about finding as many ways as possible to communicate to others - with pride and from your inner core - who, what and where you are on your life journey.
This ensures you're always congruent, true to yourself and able to maintain your self respect and dignity.
It is by going through the first five stages that makes this stage much easier.
Following this simple process will have a profound effect on your life.
When, for instance, you're in situations in which you disagree with something that's been said, your self acceptance, authenticity and integrity will prevent you from jumping in and concurring with the person just to avoid conflict.
