How to Reattach Lateral File Cabinets
- 1). Take out the drawers of the file cabinets. They're simple drawers, rolling on tracks. Pull the drawers all the way out and gently work the ends off the tracks so that you can set the drawers aside.
- 2). Examine the lateral filing cabinets. If the cabinets are designed to be put together. there will be slits and tabs on the one cabinet so that it can slip into the other with ease. Even if the file cabinets aren't designed to be put together so simply, you can still attach them.
- 3). Place one filing cabinet on top of the other in the exact position you want. Mark on the inside surface of the top filing cabinet where you need to drill a hole. If possible drill it through the frame so that the cabinets are held together solidly. Drill at least four holes, one at each corner.
- 4). Bolt the file cabinets together. Push the bolt in from the top file cabinet and screw a nut onto the bolt from the bottom cabinet where the hole went through. Make sure that all of the hardware is tight and shift the filing cabinets to make sure that they're firmly held together. Put the drawers back in and situate the cabinets where you want them against the wall.
- 5). Add L brackets to hold the lateral file cabinets to the wall. This is optional, but these brackets can provide extra stability to stop the file cabinets from falling over. Place the bracket with one part against the wall and one part against the cabinet, screwing them into place. Use one bracket per side of each cabinet. You can add another pair to anchor the lower cabinet to the floor.
