How to Find the Timing Marks on a 2001 KIA Sportage
- 1). Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands. Loosen the drain valve on the bottom of the radiator using the pliers to help turn the wing nut on the drain. Drain the radiator fluid into the drain pan.
- 2). Remove the cooling fan and bracket, using a 10-mm socket. Remove the top radiator hose and the thermostat housing, using the appropriate size socket. Remove the upper timing belt cover, using a 10-mm socket.
- 3). Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the 0-degree timing mark at twelve o'clock on the lower timing cover.
- 4). Check the timing marks on the two camshaft sprockets. The timing mark on the sprockets should be straight up at the twelve o'clock position. The mark on the sprocket should align with another mark shaped like a V on the cylinder head at the twelve o'clock position. If the camshaft marks are way off, rotate the crankshaft one more time and they will line up. The crankshaft always turns twice to every one revolution on the crankshaft.
- 5). If the timing marks on the camshaft are off by even one tooth on the timing belt, replace the timing belt.
