How to Wire a VW Alternator
- 1). Disconnect both the positive and negative cables from your car battery using a wrench before wiring your VW alternator. The battery cables will be colored red (positive) and black (negative). Move the cables away from the battery terminals.
- 2). Locate the two terminals on your VW alternator. They will be clearly labeled to indicate which is positive and negative.
- 3). Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the terminal fixings, depending on the type. It may be necessary to completely remove the fixings if the cables that attach to your VW alternator have eyelets.
- 4). Connect the black negative cable to the alternator. The opposite end of this cable is attached to the car's body and acts as a ground cable. It also goes back to the battery. Replace the fixing and tighten securely.
- 5). Connect the red positive cable to the alternator. The opposite end of this cable goes to your battery and electrical system. Replace the fixing and tighten. Check that both cables are securely attached.
- 6). Reconnect the red and black battery cables to the corresponding terminals of your car battery. Your VW alternator is wired.
