How to Protect TVs and Appliances
- 1). Plug a surge protector into the wall for use with your TV, stereo equipment, computer and other electronic equipment that is heavily used in your home. Plug the protector into the wall, then plug the TV or appliance into the protector. This will protect against power surges caused from lightning strikes or nearby transformer problems.
- 2). Plug larger appliances into the appropriate receptacles corresponding to their voltage use. For example: washers and dryers normally are plugged into 220 volt receptacles. Don't try to plug these appliances into receptacles with voltage ratings different from what is posted on the appliance.
- 3). Keep your TV and appliances dry, in a low humidity level area, away from open windows, and away from areas with a high magnetic hazard. Water, humidity, and magnetism can significantly damage any electronic device. Use a de-humidifier if your home's humidity level is above average, and place appliances away from metal poles or beams to avoid magnetic disturbances.
- 4). Dust your TVs and appliances frequently, paying specific attention to the back of the devices. Use a spray air-duster to remove dust from in between grooves and connection ports, and use a feather duster to remove surface dust and debris. Dust can settle into electronic components and cause them to short out if not removed frequently.
