How Does Taping a Sprained Ankle Help It Heal?

    A Common Injury

    • A sprained ankle is an injury common among both athletes and nonathletes. While children and adults can be injured while participating in sports and other physical activities, you can sprain your ankle simply by stepping down onto an uneven surface.

    Damage to Ligaments

    • The bones and joints in the ankles are held in position by ligaments, bands of fibrous tissue connecting the bones at a joint. Ligaments are elastic, having the ability to stretch and protect the ankle from injuries caused by twisting and turning movements. Twisting the ankle or foot inward can damage the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. A sprain can occur when the ligaments of the ankle are stretched beyond normal range. Sometimes these elastic fibers tear, causing a serious sprain.

    Symptoms of a Sprain

    • Tenderness and pain are typical symptoms of a sprained ankle. In some cases, the pain is delayed but can be severe all the same. Seek the advice of your doctor if the pain persists for more than a few days. The area of a sprain usually swells, but considerable swelling that occurs almost immediately may indicate serious injury to the ankle. Most sprains will heal between one and four weeks, with pain related to putting weight on the ankle sometimes persisting for up to three months.

    Taping Provides Support

    • Taping a sprained ankle can help to protect the ankle from further injury. Providing the leg with this additional support may provide pain relief; however, for maximum benefit, the ankle should be taped immediately following injury. Taping also keeps the ankle warm and improves movement during exercise. The ankle should not be wrapped too tightly, as being able to move the ankle actually will help it to heal more quickly. Although you want firm support, you don't want to be cutting off circulation to the foot. An elastic tape or bandage should be used to wrap the ankle in a basket weave or traditional "figure 8" pattern, leaving the heel exposed. Anything that you can do to control swelling will help the ankle to heal faster.

    Other Treatments

    • It's important to allow a sprained ankle time to heal properly in order to avoid further damage. You should be careful not to put too much weight on the foot too soon, as resting the injured foot for the first day or two can help to speed the healing process. Apply ice to the injured area for up to 20 minutes every 3 to 4 hours throughout the first three days following the injury. Doing so can help to reduce swelling and pain. Never apply ice directly to the injured area but keep a wet, thin cloth between your skin and the ice pack. Ankle exercises may be needed to help make the muscles stronger.
