Hemorrhoids Herbal Treatments
- Witch hazel is a popular herbal remedy for a variety of ailments, but it is particularly helpful in treating skin conditions. It works as an astringent, making it helpful in treating hemorrhoids. Its astringent properties allow it to constrict blood vessels. With little chance of skin irritation, witch hazel is an optimal choice for naturally treating hemorrhoids. Apply as needed to the irritated area with a saturated cotton ball. After a bowel movement, use toilet tissue that has been dampened with witch hazel.
- Comfrey is rich in something called allantoin, an anti-inflammatory agent that encourages healing. Comfrey also contains mucilage, which helps to soothe the irritation often associated with hemorrhoids. Topical balms containing comfrey are available at health food stores. Apply as need to the irritated area. Make your own comfrey ointment by mixing 1 tsp. of powdered comfrey with 1 tsp. of vegetable oil and applying to hemorrhoids with a cotton ball, as needed. Comfrey is safe to use on a long-term basis.
- Prevention is key when it comes to hemorrhoids, and psyllium is a powerful preventive as well as a treatment if they develop. It is sold under many brand names. Take 3 g of psyllium daily to prevent hemorrhoids. It will add needed bulk to the diet, thus allowing the digestive tract to work more efficiently and reducing the likelihood of developing hemorrhoids. Make sure you are properly hydrated when taking psyllium; drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water a day. You can take psyllium daily for an indefinite time.
