The Biggest Website Mistakes - Not Having Functional Hosting
These functions and the technology they are based on are designed to make it easy to:
- Create your website
- Maintain and support your website
- Keep it in a secure environment
- Hosting Technology: Why Fantastico?
- Hosting Technology: cPanel
- Hosting Support
- Hosting Reliability
- Is Your Hosting Company Big Enough?
We can use Fantastico to install WordPress.
Fantastico turns what was a two hour, error-prone, highly technical installation of WordPress into a process that takes about three clicks.
As installations with WordPress are so time consuming and so error-prone without Fantastico, not having it is reason enough to change your hosting to one that has it.
Hosting Technology: cPanel Hosting companies need to offer an easy way for you to install applications, set up your email, add another website and to maintain your site.
The most recongnised and standard way to do this is to use cPanel.
cPanel is an industry-standard control panel for managing your hosting.
As it's standard, you'll find a lot of people know how to use it - useful if you get stuck.
Training in cPanel use is widely available for little outlay.
In fact you may even find your hosting company provides free videos on how to use the most common functions of cPanel.
Hosting Support Support can mean several things.
By support here, I mean telephone support to get you over technical difficulties.
This is not the same as email support or support via an online support desk, where you send in support tickets that document a problem.
Both of these latter functions are desirable, but neither replace live, interactive help over the telephone.
So does your prospective hosting supplier offer 24x7 telephone support, or is support only available Monday-Friday 9-5pm? Does your hosting have sufficient technical support people that you can contact? Or is the support simply a list of frequently asked questions? Hosting Reliability Have a look at the uptime that your hosting provider promises.
You want your site to have little or no downtime.
You want the ability to run backups of your site.
And you want to be able to rectify outages with the hosting company's support staff when they occur, regardless of then that is.
Is Your Hosting Company Big Enough? Is the hosting provider large enough so that it's likely they will be around in five years time? Or is it a cheap one man and a dog operation? The last thing you want is to buy hosting, then have to set up somewhere else because your supplier has gone bust.
Using This List We've discussed the features you want from your hosting.
Now it's up to you to find hosting companies who provide these features.
