Making Life Changes That Stick

103 10
I am a firm believer that we can all make changes in our lives, however, true to human nature we do tend to get side-tracked very easily.
This in turn means failure in actually making the well-intended changes work.
It is with intention and determination that we should set out to make life changes.
Ensure that it fits in with your long term vision and that you are able to reap benefit from the change.
Maintain focus and put a support structure in place, like your family, to help keep you on the path to success.
For instance, you may have dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur, of starting your very own business.
It's not enough to just desire this and dream about it, you need to start asking yourself questions to make this dream a realisation.
You may want to ask yourself questions like "Why now?", "What has kept me from doing this?", "What skills are required?" I wanted to change my work direction, to create more flexibility within my work schedule and quit the long commutes to and from work.
After my husband passed away I was forced to make life changing decisions.
I also knew that I was the one preventing myself from making these changes.
I had a fear of failure.
The realisation struck that I was coming home in a grumpy mood from a long tedious commute every day and this was preventing me from being there emotionally for my child.
I started focussing my energy on realising the flexibility and happiness I could gain from becoming an entrepreneur.
Once I set these wheels in motion I joined networking groups and asked my family and friends to be my support structure.
Perhaps the outcome of your dream is not yet clear to you, or you too have a fear to either succeed or fail.
Or maybe you haven't clearly defined the emotional and mental barriers that are preventing you from achieving your goals.
Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you discover your mental/emotional barriers: 1.
Why now? 2.
What changes have I dreamed of, however, haven't yet started? 3.
What fears do I experience in trying to set and achieve my goals? 4.
What is the main reason for this change - what will I gain from it? 5.
How much of a divide is there between where I currently am and where I want to be? 6.
What and who do I need on my journey of change? Answer the above questions honestly and undistractedly when you have a quiet time to focus your mind and thoughts.
Begin by clearing and quieting your mind, clear your heart of judgement and tap into your intuition.
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
The objective is to be completely honest with yourself.
Now that you know what you want, what you have and where you currently are, you become more aware of the barriers you have put in place and the fears that you carry.
Don't be afraid to share these insightful answers with the person or people you have identified in question 6.
This sharing session could either be face to face over a coffee, or a phone call for some support.
Use a strategy that works best for you, after all, you deserve it.
