Salvaging a Z06 Corvette

• 1). Unbolt the wheels. This is the easiest place to start, as the wheels and tires are valuable if undamaged.
  
  
• 2). Check and disconnect as much of the interior as possible. The seats, radio, instrument cluster, and console could have considerable value, especially if you can remove them as a set. Most of this equipment is simply bolted or screwed on, and thus is easily removed. Once the interior is free of the panels and seats, it will be easier to access the stereo equipment. Some models could have premium Bose systems that work as a whole and do not function well when separated. Smaller, embedded items, such as the ignition lock, window motors, or gear shift selectors, can also be accessed when the panels are removed.
  
  
• 3). Remove all undamaged exterior items. As the Z06 body is mostly fiberglass, even a minor collision can cause the body panels to fracture. Once broken, they cannot be properly repaired, so don't waste time on a broken door or hood. Get door handles and trunk keyholes and keep them in a set with the ignition and keys, if possible. Grab power mirrors, headlights and taillights, and emblems (if on a broken panel).
  
  
• 4). Remove larger items last. Extremely valuable items, such as the engine head and block, will take considerable effort to remove, leaving a trail of smaller pieces that are taken out just to access them. Many times, even a head-on collision can leave these parts undamaged, and the drive train should be removed from the radiator to the rear differential to check the condition.
  
  
• 5). Inspect the frame and remaining parts for severe damage, and remove them if necessary. Glass can be reused if undamaged and recycled if broken. Recycle the frame if it is not to be reconditioned at a local junkyard. Assess the exhaust system, if applicable.
