Pokémon Types

• Each Pokémon has one or two types associated with it that dictate the battle moves it can learn and indicate what weakness or resistance it has to other Pokémon types. These seventeen types are normal, fire, water, grass, electric, ice, fighting, poison, ground, flying, psychic, bug, rock, ghost, dragon, dark and steel.
  
  

Battle Move Types

• Battle moves Pokémon learn come in the one of the seventeen types as well. A Pokémon primarily learns moves of its own type, but depending on its species, it may also learn moves of other types.
  
  

Weakness and Resistance

• Pokémon types and move types have advantages and disadvantages to each other. Fire, for example, is strong against Grass. Grass is strong against Water. Water is strong against Fire. Knowing about these relationships will affect your battle strategy by helping you choose which Pokémon to pit against another.
  
  

Hit Points

• Each Pokémon has a certain hit point (HP) value associated with it, and each blow it takes in battle lowers that HP. A Pokémon will lose more HP when hit with a move type it has a weakness to than when hit with one it has resistance to. When the HP reaches zero, the Pokémon faints and loses the battle.
