Handling And Overcoming Depression
Depression is a mental disorder which makes a person feel sad and dejected for few days or more. All of us feel unhappy sometime or the other. However, if this sadness continues for a couple of days or so, the mental state is called depression. It can affect your thought process, behaviour, feelings and physical health as well. It can also spoil your relationship with family and friends, your performance at work or school and may even lead to the thoughts of committing suicide. Hence one must take depression seriously -be it with self or any family member.
The first step to overcome depression is to know the symptoms of depression. A depressed person might be feeling:
Anxious and restless or empty from inside.
Feeling hopeless, worthless, pessimistic, guilty and helpless
Easily irritable and lack of energy.
Loss of interest in work and once pleasurable activities like hobbies and socializing.
Eating much more or far less than regular diet
Lack of sleep, concentration and forgetfulness
Persistent pains or digestive problem.
Thought of suicide or suicide attempt.
A person suffering from depression might be showing one or more of these symptoms. Once you find these symptoms, it is important to understand what has given rise to this kind of situation. Depression can arise due to several reasons such as loss of job, loss of a family member or a close friend, heartbreak, performance issues at work or school etc. Many women suffer from depression due to changes in the hormonal level in their body.
Once you know the reason that led to depression, then it will be easier for you to help yourself or your family member come out of depression. Here is what you should do:
Emotional support- It is necessary to get emotional support for a depressed person. Help the person speak out his heart and soul. If the person feels like howling and crying, let him do that. This will ease his state of agony. Once he does that, slowly move the negative conversation towards positivity.
Move outside- It is essential to move out of the house in the sun or in a garden. Sunlight and the green colour of the trees have amazing ability to relieve anxiety.
Sleep- Sleep for 7-8 hours a day and scheduled time. Do not stay awake till late night. Sufficient sleep will pacify the mind and restore the energy level.
Exercise- Though it is hard to involve oneself in any kind of exercise, once he does that, his mind gets diverted and the heart beat comes in the required range of 115- 165 beats per second.
Prayer- Prayer gives peace of mind and initiates a positive thought process. As negativity diminishes, depression also disappears.
Socialize- Avoid staying alone. Always be with a family member or friend. When you are amongst people, you are getting involved in various discussions and hence negative thoughts do not come in mind.
Goal setting- If the depression is caused due to performance issue at work or in studies, it is necessary to set your goal right. Decide upon an achievable target and break it into small task. Take one at a time and as you complete one small task after another after, you will realize that your restlessness is disappearing.
The above methods are good for curing the problem in normal scenario. However if they do not help, contact a psychological counsellor or a medical practitioner without any delay.
