Biggest Stories of the Decade 2000 - 2009 - Bankruptcies and Job Losses
The 2000s meant a decade of lean years in many ways for airlines - ail-lines. Long-standing airlines that dated back to the 1920s and 1930s went bankrupt and ceased operations - Swissair, Aloha Airlines, Ansett Australia and Sabena to name a few.
Some airline bankruptcies allowed for restructuring as with Delta Airlines, Air Canada and United Airlines among the many that did in the past decade and are still flying.
But one unifying factor in the airlines that stopped operating, in the restructuring, is the shrinking number of employees in the field. In the past 10 years, air travel may be up, but the number of employees is down about 20% from its peak - whether by technology or economy, that is a lot of lost jobs.
