Pokolbin is located in the eastern part of the Australian state of New South Wales. It rests in the internationally famed wine region of the Lower Hunter Valley. Pokolbin is in fact a rural area rather than a town, though it is situated between two towns, Cessnock and Branxton. It is a popular attraction due to its many wineries and vineyards, day spas, resorts and local artisans. What follows are some of the attractions of the land.

Wine is the life of the Hunter Valley and is what brings the majority of its visitors. Shiraz and Semillion, Chardonay and Cabernet, all are grown, made and sampled here. International companies, home crafting legacy vintners and all others live and work here.

Vintage Hunter Wine and Visitor Centre is the nerve center of the area's wine tourism. It can be found at 455 Wine Country drive and one finds directions here to restaurants, hotels, resorts and public events. Of course, one can also find a directory and maps to the wineries and cellars. Some of those located in the Valley are Vinden Estate Wines, Thalgora Estate, Blueberry Hill Vineyard, Tyrrell's Wines and Morgan Family Wine Growers.

At the center of the area is Pokolbin Village, popular as a base from which to tour the wine country due to its central proximity and being in walking distance of nearly all local wineries and cellars. The resort is set up like a village amidst landscaped grounds. Visitors may stay in suites with private verandas or bedroom villas and a homestead for more private stays. Tours of the wine country and its attractions can be arranged with the staff there.

The Hunter Valley Gardens offer another kind of stay. There is a set of accommodations, the Mercure Resort, and all manner of events and festivals are put on here. But the attraction and heart are the twelve gardens that give the place its names. Over twenty-five hectares of landscaped acreage sits here as a testament to the talents of famed landscape gardeners Bill and Imelda Roche.

Here can be visited the Rose Garden, a corkscrew patterned garden of over 8,000 roses of more than 150 kinds. Also the Sunken Garden, made to appear like a sunken grotto beneath a large waterfall and shaped around a pond the size of five Olympic swimming pools and planted with a variety of evergreen and deciduous trees. The Chinese Garden and the Oriental Garden feature Chinese, Korean and Japanese motifs such as moss covered rocks, bamboo stands, gardens of raked gravel, pagodas amidst gingko trees and lily covered lakes stocked with Asian fish.

Barrington Tops is a natural area that is divided into a State Forest and a National Park. Here one finds great basalt cliffs, rain forests, moss swamps and trout streams. It is on the list of World Heritage sites and is a twenty-five kilometer long plateau set between extinct volcanoes. Diverse and plentiful flora and fauna live here. The site provides for outdoor activities such as bushwalks, canoeing and kayaking, mountain and trail bicycling and camping.

In sum, the pleasures of nature under cultivation, and nature left wild are the heritage of Pokolbin.
