How to Flip Putt in Disc Golf

    • 1). The “grip” used for a flip putt is distinct in that the hand does not grip the disc tightly as it does with a forehand or backhand grip. Place the thumb of the throwing hand in the center of the disc, on the bottom side of the disc so that it balances. Take your four fingers to support the disc along the rim. The result of this grip will look something like a waiter carrying a tray; your hand should be palm up with your disc resting near your shoulder.

    • 2). Release the disc by pushing the it forward with the fingers. This will send the disc toward the basket, flipping end over end, hence the name flip putt. When you throw a flip putt, the disc starts relatively high, near the ear, and flies at a downward angle, minimizing the chance that the throw will go far past the target. This is especially helpful for those who have not otherwise learned to control their power.

    • 3). Be aware of the limitations of the flip putt. While flip putting is an easy way to make a fair percentage of putts within 15 feet, its usefulness diminishes outside that range. The end-over-end flipping motion makes the flip putt erratic when thrown in wind. In light wind, a flip putt may be effective within 15 feet, but in moderate wind, it can be blown off course even at very short distances. Another risk of throwing a flip putt is that the disc has a greater probability to land on edge and roll when it hits the ground.
