Uses for Mineral Oil
- Mineral oil has the ability to cut through dirt and grease buildup that accumulates over the course of a day. It strips it from the skin by forming a film over the makeup so that the beauty products easily slide off.
- Mineral oil, when applied to a wooden cutting board or butcher's block, will help hide the nicks and scrapes and make the wood more limber. Mineral oil will rejuvenate the appearance of soapstone countertops, making the counter look like new.
- Mineral oil is used to treat constipation in horses, due to its properties as a lubricant, and because it acts as a barrier to water, stopping the absorption of water through the intestine. Mineral oil is used as a laxative in other animals.
- When clay is used to make molds or stamps, mineral oil is applied to the mold to prevent the mold from sticking to the clay. Mineral oil, when added to polymer-based clays, will help soften the clay.
- Mineral oil does not conduct electricity, so it is used to cool electrical components, such as transformers and high voltage switchgears. Hydraulic fluid is actually mineral oil, which works well because it cannot be compressed.
