How to Clean Inside a Computer

104 13
    • 1). Turn off the computer and disconnect it from the power outlet. This eliminates the chance of electrical damage if any of the components get wet. It will also prevent accidental electrocution.

    • 2). Disconnect all accessories from the computer, including the monitor, printer and webcam.

    • 3). Remove the screws holding the tower cover in place. Put the screws in a safe place.

    • 4). Wash the inside of the tower cover with warm, soapy water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe the tower cover dry and set it aside.

    • 5). Blow dust and lint from the circuit boards, fans and other components with a can of compressed air. Hold the can at least 6 inches away from the area you are cleaning to prevent damage to the components.

    • 6). Attach a small nozzle to the vacuum hose and gently suction the loose dust, hair and lint from the compartment. Avoid pushing the nozzle into hard-to-reach areas; this might damage the components.

    • 7). Dampen a cleaning cloth with soapy water and gently wipe the blades of the fans. Do not use too much water; it might drip into the components and cause severe damage.

    • 8). Check all of the components to make sure you did not miss any dust or lint. Do not touch the circuit boards with your fingers; the oil from your skin can damage the circuits.

    • 9). Replace the tower cover and screws. Do not overtighten the screws.
