How to Make Healthy Food for an Old Cat

104 5
    • 1). Steer clear of foods that are dangerous for your cat. These include baby food, citrus fruits, raisins, macadamia nuts, mushrooms, onions, garlic, raw meat, raw eggs and bread dough.

    • 2). Consider your cat's specific health needs. For example, some older cats may suffer from diabetes, kidney failure, diseases of the intestines, obesity, etc. Consult your veterinarian about any special adjustments you may need to make to your cat's diet.

    • 3). Provide a diet with plenty of calories and protein. These are both important for an aging cat. Although obesity is not especially common among older cats, be careful to adjust its diet if you notice weight changes.

    • 4). Experiment with recipes to discover what your cat does and doesn't like. For example, try preparing a meal by blending chicken, rice, vegetables and chicken broth in a blender or food processor. You may also try scrambling a couple eggs and topping them with cottage cheese and vegtables.

    • 5). Make the change to homemade cat food carefully. Introduce the homemade food slowly, allowing your cat to adjust to its new food before you wean in off commercial food. Also, be sure to include a multivitamin in your cat's new diet.
