How Can I Read 525 BMW Diagnostic Codes?

    • 1). Uncover the data link connection and connect your diagnostic scanner to it.

    • 2). Use your BMW's ignition key to start the the electrical system.

    • 3). Enable the scanner. How to do this depends on the scanner that your are using. Some turn themselves on automatically once data streams in from the BMW's diagnostic system, and some require the user to manually turn the scanner on if you do not have this feature, but always consult your manual ahead of time.

    • 4). Watch the scanner's read-out screen. As soon as the BMW's computer and the scanner link, all current diagnostic trouble codes will appear on the read-out screen.

    • 5). Look the reported codes up in your scanner's manual. It will contain generic codes common to all vehicles. Some scanner's manuals will include supplemental diagnostic codes too. BMW created these codes and they may not be in your 525's owner manual, but they can be easily found among some of the non-BMW affiliated websites that list all OBD-II codes (see Resources).

    • 6). Read the code description very carefully. If it sounds like something very unfamiliar to you, you may not want to attempt the repair yourself. However, once you drive the 525 to a BMW approved mechanic, you can explain what the problem is and save yourself from being charged a diagnostic fee.
