How to Make Cut Coins

104 30

    Cutting the Coin

    • 1). Mount the bench pin to the edge of the workspace using the C-clamps. A properly mounted bench pin has the open end of the V facing you, with the V and the hole sticking off edge of the table. (See Reference 3)

    • 2). Pick the coin to cut. Choose the section to cut, and whether you will make a simple hole for stringing the coin as jewelry, or more complicated cuts.

    • 3). Drill a hole entirely through part of the coin, with the coin over the notch on the bench pin. Don't drill too close to the edge of the coin; this can cause dimpling and bending. If the coin is very small, use another C-clamp to secure it while you work; otherwise hold it with your free hand. Continue drilling additional holes at each end of the section you plan on cutting out.

    • 4). Remove the blade from the jeweler's saw and insert the blade into one of the drilled holes. Securely attach both ends of the blade to the handle of the saw. The saw handle should fit over and under the bench pin, with the coin in the bench pin's notch.

    • 5). Carefully move the saw blade straight up and down to saw away the coin. Stop occasionally to check your work and make sure you haven't removed too much of the coin.

    • 6). Smooth the sawed edges using the sandpaper.

    • 7). Polish the coin with the polishing cloth.
