SMARTBoard Homophone Activities

    Homophone Pictionary

    • After discussing homophones, pair students up with a partner. Pass out index cards to partners on which you have written pairs of homophones such as "where, wear." Explain that when it is their turn, partners will go up to the Smartboard and draw a picture to illustrate the pair of homophones on the index cards. They may write no words or letters. Each partner should draw one of the pair of homophones.

After using a couple of minutes to formulate a strategy, student partners go to the board where each begins to draw one of the pair of homophones. As in traditional Pictionary, students in the audience must attempt to guess the pair of homophones and raise a hand to signify they know the answer. After the homophones are guessed correctly, have the students write the homophones under the picture. Print out the pictures from the game and bind in a book for class use.

    Homophone Word Game

    • To prepare for the game, create a slide show of homophones on your computers. Each slide must contain a set of homophone words and a picture that clearly matches one of the homophones but not the other. For best results, create a slide show containing at least 25 pairs of homophones. You may find some free slide shows available online.

To begin, have students number a paper for the number of slides you create. As you show each slide, students write down the homophone word they feel matches the picture. When finished, replay the slide show and have student volunteers come up to the Smartboard and circle the correct word. Students in the audience confirm correct answers and check their papers. Students with the most answers correct win the game.

    Alphabetical Homophones

    • Students must attempt to think of a homophone set for every letter of the alphabet in this activity. Pass out 100 beans or other small objects to students. Students bid their beans to be the first to write a set of homophones for the letter of the alphabet displayed on the Smartboard. Correct answers receive the number they bid while wrong answers lose the beans bid.

Display a letter on the Smartboard. Students must think of a homophone word set that begins with that letter. The first student to raise his hand states his bid of one, two or three beans and walks to the Smartboard where he writes his answer. Correct homophone sets earn the student the number of beans bid from the teacher. Incorrect homophone sets lose the number of beans bid and the student must give them to the teacher. Play continues through the entire alphabet. The player with the most beans left at the end of the alphabet wins the game.
