How to Replace Inner Tie Rod Ends on a 1991 Ford Taurus

    • 1). Apply the parking brake, and block the rear wheels with wheel blocks. Loosen the lug nuts on the front tire with a lug wrench. Raise the vehicle with a jack, and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and the front wheel.

    • 2). Hold the tie rod with locking pliers and loosen the jam nut slightly with an adjustable wrench. Use white paint or a marker to mark the threads where the tie rod is currently installed.

    • 3). Remove the cotter pin with pliers and use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut on the tie-rod stud. Disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle with a two-jaw puller using the nut to pull against. Remove the puller and nut. Unscrew the tie-rod end from the tie rod using an adjustable wrench.

    • 4). Install the tie-rod end with your fingers, and screw it on the tie rod up to the marked position of the old one. Tighten the jam nut on the tie rod securely using pliers. Insert the tie-rod stud in the steering knuckle, and secure it with the new nut. Tighten the nut on the stud to at least 35-foot-lbs. using a torque wrench. Install the new cotter pin using pliers.

    • 5). Install the wheel, and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench. Remove the jack stands and wheel blocks, and lower the vehicle using a jack.
