How to Replace a Serpentine Belt on a 2000 Mustang V6
- 1). Park the 2000 Mustang on a level surface, engage the parking brake and open the hood. Allow the engine to cool off if it has recently been driven. The Mustang should have a diagram in the engine compartment (usually on the radiator shroud) which details the routing for the belt. If this diagram is missing or illegible, make your own diagram of the routing before removing the belt.
- 2). Locate the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley sits between the air conditioning compressor and crankshaft pulleys and to the left of the water pump pulley. Use the serpentine belt diagram located in the engine compartment as a guide to find the tensioner pulley.
- 3). Place a socket wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and pull up to relieve tension on the serpentine belt.
- 4). Slide the serpentine belt off of the tensioner pulley and move the tensioner pulley back to its original position. Do not allow the pulley to snap back into place as this will damage it.
- 5). Pull the serpentine belt off of the remaining pulleys. The 2000 Mustang V-6 has six additional pulleys after removing the belt from the tensioner pulley.
- 6). Install the new serpentine belt around all of the pulleys except the tensioner pulley, using the serpentine belt diagram as a guide. You must follow the routing diagram exactly as it is shown to ensure proper engine operation. Ensure the serpentine belt is centered in the middle groove of each of the pulleys.
- 7). Rotate the tensioner pulley upward with the socket wrench and slide the serpentine belt onto the pulley.
- 8). Move the tensioner pulley back into position. The serpentine belt will tighten around all of the pulleys.
